President's Report No 38

Monday 26th March 2018

A very busy meeting with four guest speakers!

Jace Healy from Lorne P-12 College told us about their VCAL project which will take students to the Saint Teresa Aboriginal Community near Alice Springs where they will have an opportunity to share experiences. Later in the year the students from Saint Teresa will visit Lorne. Our club presented Jace with a cheque for $1000 to help sponsor this great youth exchange project.

Rotarian Colin McDonald and his wife Jan visited from Benalla to update us on the Awake and Shine school project in Kalimpong, where the water filters that our club purchased have at last been installed. The children were suffering kidney disease due to the limited rations of drinking water so this project will make a world of difference to this isolated mountain community. Well done Rotarians of Torquay!
John Oswald introduced John Macdonald and Peter Lendfers to talk to us about the need for a female prosthetist to be trained for the Viaola Hospital in Tonga. The board have approved the application of a global grant for this project, to be submitted by our club.
Announcements

  • Our sincere condolences to Honorary Member Mary Elliot, on the passing of her husband Ken. His funeral was held on 28th March. Maggie sent flowers from our club and also officiated the service as pictured. Note in the foreground the fine merino wool that Ken spend most of his working life, as a Wool Broker, handling the sale of for local producers. Also pictured is the set of skis he used at Mt Hotham when he first met Mary

  • Thanks to Gail Chrisfield and all the volunteers who ran another successful beach day for the children from Strathewan on Monday 26th March. Gail received a copies of the School's award winning fire awareness book and DVD titled "Life in the Bush" These copies are available for members to take and view. See Gail for a booking
  • Thanks to Linda Neale who is arranging shoeboxes of toiletries for the bush fire victims in our district. The first lot will be taken this week but please keep contributions coming as another lot will be taken in 3 weeks time.
  • We have received thanks from our District Governor for our donation of $2000 to the bush fire appeal.
  • RI President Ian Risely has asked every Rotarian to plant a tree by Earth Day on 22 April. The Surf Coast Shire is arranging for us to plant our trees at Deep Creek, between the Esplanade and Surf Coast Highway, behind the Wyndham resort. The probable date is 19th April but as soon as this is confirmed we will call for volunteers.
  • Last call for members who have not registered for the District conference in Mt Gambier from 6-8 April. Online registrations close on 1st April.
  • We are still having issues with some members not clicking on Whoozin to RSVP for meetings. This is causing chaos with catering! You cannot get into Whoozin via ClubRunner. You must respond to the emails when they are sent to you or creat your own password and login direct on the internet to whoozin.com as per the email you would have received 2 weeks ago from Greg. You can change your mind when the reminder email is sent by pressing “edit” if you need to. Bruce Smith generally adds the guest speakers as his guests – please don’t double up. You can view who is coming by scrolling down the list of those marked as “IN”.

    **NB** District Assembly
District assembly is on Sunday 29th April at Marion College, 304 Barkly St, Ararat. The cost is $25 per head.
ALL INCOMING BOARD MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND but all Rotarians are cordially invited. Please let me know who is going and I will coordinate car-pooling as it’s about 2.5 hours drive each way.

    Monday 2nd April
NO MEETING as this is Easter Monday.

Remember dark chocolate is beneficial for people over 60 but milk chocolate is not!

2018 Strathewen School Visit

Thanks - again - from our Strathewen friends

Last Monday, 26 March, dawned grey, miserable and windy; the first time in nine years Torquay has put on less than perfect weather for our annual day at the beach for Strathewen Primary School.

After consultation with Torquay Surf Academy (TSA), the event was moved to Cosy Corner due to the strong winds and big waves at our usual venue, Torquay Surf Beach. Huge thanks to the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee, especially Phil Brown, and to our own Mal Slater for helping to facilitate this.

More than 50 people from the school community, which experienced significant trauma and loss from the 2009 Black Saturday wildfires, made the trip down; 29 young students and almost as many adults, including parents and grandparents.

Judging by the lovely message below from Principal Jane Hayward, everyone had a ball.

Thank you for a wonderful day in the surf, as always. There were a few sleepy heads on the bus on the way home, but everyone enjoyed a fabulous day. The kids didn't even mention the weather!  They loved being in the 'warm sea'. Thanks to all the fabulous Rotarians for looking after us - you did a terrific job.

Thanks again for being such special people and a big part of life at SPS.  We're very lucky that you found us all those years ago!

Huge thanks to Mal, John Mc, Lois and Graham, and Chris Sim for ensuring everyone was well fed throughout the day, to Gally, Brad and the crew from TSA, to Amanda for being there to lend support (especially during the keys locked in car incident) and to Karen for helping out in the surf despite a shoulder injury - she wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Gail Chrisfield

Bush Fire Shoe Box Appeal for Toiletries

Most of you will be aware of the fires that caused so much anxiety and destruction within our District last weekend. Some people have not only lost their homes but their livelihoods as well ,others have lost their livelihood.

I would like to ask for your support and help to collect toiletries and we will fill shoe boxes for the fire victims.

The staff and residents at my work mecwacare Elstoft House have started to collect toiletries as they did late last year when we supported farmers in the Loddon Region. The response within three days has been amazing. I am so proud of my staff and they way they have wanted to support this cause

Will you please help support this cause and see how many shoe boxes we can fill?

If you would like and are creative maybe you could decorate shoe boxes - adds a personal touch to the exercise

I will bring a box to Rotary on Monday night for you to put any toiletries you would like to donate in to, alternatively items may be dropped to Surf Coast LET at 5/15 Bell St, Torquay

Thanking you in anticipation

Linda Neale
