President's Report No 50
Monday 18th June
We had a great talk from Damian Armour, CEO of the Epworth Hospital, Waurn Ponds. He highlighted the difficulties the Government will face in providing health care for an aging population with fewer young tax payers. Keep healthy!
I was proud to present Bruce Smith with a sapphire Paul Harris Fellow. Thanks Bruce for your great contribution to the club this year and good luck with your board position as Director of Club Service in 2018/19, assisted by Jan Emmett who will be the program organiser.
Linda Neale and Richard Mierzejewski, who were also unable to attend Changeover, were thanked for their contributions to the board this year.
STAR OF THE MONTH was presented to Michael Reed, who will keep this award until Trevor returns.
Thanks to all members for donating socks for the homeless and a special thanks to Linda Neale and the residents of her Aged Care facility, who are knitting beanies and scarfs to go with the socks. This is proving to be a very worthwhile project in partnership with the Salvos.
Thanks also to Graham Gill who ran our club’s Bowelscan project in May.
Please call Kelly Binyon in you (or a local family) can provide accommodation for incoming exchange student, Eric, from Germany.
Job Vacancy – Battery and bulb Recycling Project
This project has been run by Rudi, who has resigned, so we need a member to help John McDonald (who has assisted Rudi). It requires someone to collect batteries from 8 outlets at least once a month and drive them to the recycling facility in North Geelong. The batteries are heavy to lift so it requires someone with a bit of muscle. If you can help, please discuss with Rudi before the end of June.
Some points from the Board Meeting
Our achievements this year are available on Rotary Club Central for members to view.
Club fees are due in 1st July
Our club administration of the Rotary Downunder Magazine has been handed over to Lesley Shedden
Michael is looking into a further tree planting project and the viability of a Torquay Tide Clock.
Please remember that risk assessment forms must be signed for every event.
Surf Coast Secondary College is planning a trip to Kokoda in July 2019 and is planning much fundraising, including a golf day on 30 November. The board approved $850 to advertise Rotary on their trailer. A further amount of $700 to be paid later in the year for a porter in PNG.
The board approved $500 to help sponsor an exchange student in Nhill.
We have applied for a District Grant to refurbish our BBQ trailer and also to train members in food handing. If you are interested in doing this training please let Lesley Shedden know.
There are still some Rotary key tag/USB sticks with photos available at $10 each. Please contact Greg Plumridge if you want one. Left overs will be used for speaker gifts when the art prints are finished.
Monday 25th June
Brendan Holland from Barwon Rotaract will talk to us about “Attracting Younger Members to Join Rotary.”

Editor:- My apologies for the lack of photos from last Monday's meeting somehow the majority of my pics have become corrupted since I saved them to my computer earlier in the week. I am still attempting to recover them and will publish them in the future if I am successful. GP
The speaker last week was Mr. Damien Amour, CEO of Epworth Hospital, Geelong. Damien has been with Epworth Freemasons Hospital system for over 11 years and became CEO 4 years ago however, it was not opened to the public until approximately 2 years ago. Damien spoke about the health industry in general, health services and some background to the Epworth.
The health care industry comprises of Universal which is a mix of private and public, which under Medicare is funded by income tax subsidy and Private where 46% of the population has the benefits of health insurance. The health industry cost the Federal and State Governments $150 billion in 2015 or 9.5% GDP. This places Australia mid-range compared with other countries. The USA spends 14% of GDP on health services but is considered not really any better than Australia. It was noted that the expenditure on health care is increasing with age and life expectancy – in 1890, the average was 45 to 50 whereas in 2014, it was 80 for males and 85 for females, much of which is due to the improved health care system and medications. The population is now dying from different reasons compared with the past century – in 1900, there were a wide range of causes including tuberculosis and pneumonia, now it is mainly cancer and heart disease. For the health care system, the Federal Government pays 42%, State 27% and patients, 20% and private insurance 11%.
There are 1330 hospitals in the country, 701 public, 630 private and each year, handling 10.6 million hospitalisations. There are 3 groups – Public/Private for profit, Day visit private not for profit and Hospital stay private. It is a feature that health insurance held by people has been steady for a number of years after falling from 77.8% in 1970 to 46.9% in 1990 however there has been a steady decline over the past 12 months largely due to costs.
The Epworth hospital system started in 1920 and is now the largest not for profit organisation with 9 campuses in Victoria. The Geelong hospital was mooted due to the population growth including the ageing, and leakage to the Melbourne campus of over 2000 patients each year. It was set up to fulfil the purpose of Epworth – to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population. It is also supported by the local university. The facilities of Epworth Geelong include a bed capacity of 262 although only 172 are currently in use, all of which are private rooms. The hospital has now many departments such as surgical including same day surgery, rehabilitation, maternity (started last year), several operating theatres, intensive care, cardiac cathertisation (?), day oncology and renal dialysis. The Epworth has an agreement for 10 % of public patients are through Barwon Health. Almost 4 years ago, Damien was the sole employee, there are now 865 employed staff supported by many volunteers in areas such as personal services and general assistance. The hospital supports a robust system to gauge the happiness and wellbeing of both staff and patients – the Geelong Epworth is very high in all measures compared with other benchmark campuses with fantastic customer feedback (the best out of 42 hospitals). All complaints are very carefully investigated and signed off by Damien.
Overall, Damien gave a very interesting presentation as measured by the interest and questions from the members present. In addition, there is the possibility of a Vocation visit to the hospital.
Most of you were quite captivated with the Photos that were shown at our Clubs 30th Anniversary Party and expressed an interest in obtaining a copy of the presentation.
Whilst we could upload these pics to the cloud so that you can access them I'm sure you will agree that there's nothing quite like having a copy of your own on a USB memory stick. So.....we have purchased a quantity of 16gb Memory Sticks and Rotary Club of Torquay etched Key Tags (see pic below)
These will be available at a cost of $10 and will be able to pick up at our Changeover Lunch next weekend.
We are now fully operational with our new system for registering for our weekly dinner meetings. Called Whoozin, this program is used by other local Rotary Clubs with great success.
To make it easy for everyone I have prepared a Whoozin User Manual which is stored on Clubrunner under "Club Documents" that you will be able to print off if you wish.
In Summary the way it will work is:-
You will receive an initial email invitation each Monday for the following week's meeting.
You can immediately accept or decline, leave until later.
You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
You can register up to 5 guests
You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
Please Note that if you do not register your intentions you will be charged for the dinner fee.
If you have any problems please free to contact myself Greg Plumridge 0418521321 or Michael Reed 0418524315 for details on how to work the program.
