President's Report No 34

Hi Everyone,

Hope this finds you all well and settling into our new way of life! 🙃

The Board met via Zoom 🎥 🖥 last Monday and held a successful meeting. I’ll give a quick summary at tomorrow night’s meeting.

Be sure to use the link in the first of Lesley's emails titled "Torquay Rotary Club online meeting Monday 30 March using Zoom"  from Wednesday the 25th.  I encourage everyone to try and join in. It may take us a couple of meetings to get the hang of it but it does work well.

Apparently the Zoom practice meeting  Lesley held on Thursday was a success with 13 members logging on and able to familiarise themselves with the functions of the meeting platform.

See you online...no pyjamas!🙈

I cannot reiterate strongly enough please STAY HOME. The disgraceful display at our local beaches on Saturday was a lesson in stupidity which resulted in all beaches being Closed! We as Rotarians need to be leaders in our families, circle of friends and neighbours. We can lessen the impact if we #flattenthecurve

As the Prime Minister announced tonight:

1️  We may only gather as a pair from now on but must practice social distancing. Household groups may be larger but don’t move far from your residence!🏃🏻🔛🚶 or  👨👩👧👦

2️  ALL members 70 years old or over should  self-isolate for their own protection except for essential outings for food and pharmacy. Please note you can shop online & order from Peachs have both have FREE delivery. The Torquay Pharmacy will also deliver to your door-prescriptions can be emailed from your medical centre🙌

3️  Please download the Coronavirus App ️ It has excellent information & step by step health checks for ease of mind😌

I’ll get off my soap box 🗣 but as you all know I live with two other essential workers and am petrified of the virus coming into my workplace🙀

Thank you and take care xx

Yours in Rotary Service

Kelly

A ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE WITH D5060 WASHINGTON BRITISH COLUMBIA
Now it may seem to be a ridiculous thing to be promoting this Friendship Exchange that is scheduled to take place in September at a time when we are all housebound thanks to Covid-19.  But regardless of how unrealistic this appears please focus on an "Expression of Interest" for the concept rather than the dates being proposed if you are interested...…....
.

D 5060 Washington/British Columbia has been in touch with D 9780 regarding a RFE between the two Rotary Districts. As this is their first exchange there have been a few complications regarding dates and due to the size of their District getting the team from the South side to the North side. But we think we are ready to go now.

Again we are looking at Expressions of Interest only at this stage as the coronavirus may still be around and if that is so, no one is going anywhere. The dates for this exchange are Saturday 12th September 2020 to Friday 25th September 2020.

The RFE to D 5970 has been popular and the team is now in place and the team leaders have been selected and the team are now just waiting to see what happens next.

I know that some of you may not be meeting weekly but if you can get this information out to your club Rotarians by email and in your bulletins, that would be amazing and much appreciated.

Again, this is for Expressions of Interest only at this stage. There will be no RFE trip if the coronavirus continues to spread through the world. Please keep safe and look after your family, friends and neighbours.

 Thank you,

Gail Barrett-Chair

Rotary D 9780 Friendship Exchange.

A Beautiful Message From Bill Gates
What is the Corona/ Covid-19 Virus Really Teaching us?

I’m a strong believer that there is a spiritual purpose behind everything that happens, whether that is what we perceive as being good or being bad.
As I meditate upon this, I want to share with you what I feel the Corona/ Covid-19 virus is really doing to us:
1) It is reminding us that we are all equal, regardless of our culture, religion, occupation, financial situation or how famous we are. This disease treats us all equally, perhaps we should to. If you don’t believe me,
 just ask Tom Hanks.
2) It is reminding us that we are all connected and something that affects one person has an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, by oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression.
3) It is reminding us of how precious our health is and how we have moved to neglect it through eating nutrient poor manufactured food and drinking water that is contaminated with chemicals upon chemicals. If we don’t look after our health, we will, of course, get sick.
4) It is reminding us of the shortness of life and of what is most important for us to do, which is to help each other, especially those who are old or sick. Our purpose is not to buy toilet roll.
5) It is reminding us of how materialistic our society has become and how, when in times of difficulty, we remember that it’s the essentials that we need (food, water, medicine)
as opposed to the luxuries that we sometimes unnecessarily give value to.
6) It is reminding us of how important our family and home life is and how much we have neglected this. It is forcing us back into our houses so we can rebuild them into our home and
 to strengthen our family unit.
7) It is reminding us that our true work is not our job, that is what we do, not what we were created to do.
Our true work is to look after each other, to protect each other and to be of benefit to one another.
8) It is reminding us to keep our egos in check. It is reminding us that no matter how great we think we are or how great others think we are,
a virus can bring our world to a standstill.
9) It is reminding us that the power of freewill is in our hands. We can choose to cooperate and help each other, to share, to give, to help and to support each other or we can choose to be selfish, to hoard, to look after
only our self. Indeed, it is difficulties that bring out our true colors.
10) It is reminding us that we can be patient, or we can panic. We can either understand that this type of situation has happened many times before in history and will pass, or we can panic and see it as the end of the world and, consequently, cause ourselves more harm than good.
11) It is reminding us that this can either be an end or a new beginning. This can be a time of reflection and understanding, where we learn from our mistakes, or it can be the start of a cycle which will continue until we finally learn the lesson we are meant to.
12) It is reminding us that this Earth is sick. It is reminding us that we need to look at the rate of deforestation just as urgently as we look at the speed at which toilet rolls are disappearing off of shelves. We are sick because our home is sick.
13) It is reminding us that after every difficulty, there is always ease. Life is cyclical, and this is just a phase in this great cycle. We do not need to panic; this too shall pass.
14) Whereas many see the Corona/ Covid-19 virus as a great disaster, I prefer to see it as a great corrector
It is sent to remind us of the important lessons that we seem to have forgotten and it is up to us if we will learn them or not.

Bushfire Relief Donation Options - Be Sure The Money Reaches Those in Need
As much of Australia deals with the tragedy of Bushfires many donation funds are being set up by both government and private groups, and one of the most commonly asked questions is

"Which Charity will ensure that your donation dollars reach those in need?"

When you donate through Rotary you can be assured that over 97% of the monies raised will go directly to those in need.

We are very saddened by the devastating bushfires in our district and across Australia. If you are looking to donate to help those suffering, it is important to make sure your donation is well directed. Below are details of 2 Rotary funds which are assisting those affected.

1. RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service National Fire Appeal
This is the only option for those who can only donate to a recipient with DGR (Donor Gift Recipient) status, or those who want tax deductibility on their donations. Go to www.rawcs.org.au to donate. To make sure the funds go to those affected by the fires in our district, tag the donation to ‘East Gippsland’. RAWCS do use 2.75% of the donations for administration.

2. East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee
This is an account of the Rotary Club of Bairnsdale with the funds controlled by the East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee. Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Projects Account BSB 633000 Acct 165960451. Please email the East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee when you donate eastgrotaryfireaid@gmail.com

Other worthy causes are:-

East Gippsland Hay Donations and transport costs
For those wishing to donate hay to East Gippsland or elsewhere it is being organised through ‘Need for Feed’

Go to http://www.needforfeed.org/  to arrange it.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is coordinating fodder relief for farmers affected by bushfires in Gippsland and the Upper Murray. The VFF has secured an agreement with the Victorian Government to facilitate the transport of fodder to affected regions. This includes reimbursement of freight costs for transport of donated fodder.
