President's Report No 33

Hello all,
it was a General Meeting with a difference on Monday as we congregated on the balcony overlooking the Billabong at Minya Winery.
The weather was magnificent as was the ambience, it would have been easy to spend a long evening there.

But, there was Rotary business to attend to and the reports and announcements were kept to a minimum.
Amanda was our Sergeant-at-Arms for the evening and did a great job at what was, for her, very short notice.
Unfortunately, our Guest Speaker was unable to attend so Kelly very ably stood in for him and the presentation of her recent trip around New Zealand brought back many memories of my own ramblings around that beautiful country – well done Kelly, a great talk!!
We will return to Minya next week and our Guest Speaker will be Dr David Goldsmith from the Rotary Club of Ballarat West talking about dental care in Vanuatu.

Cheers
Trevor
NB: the Book Fair Committee will meet at the Winery one hour earlier at 5pm for a ‘de-brief’

2019 Strathewen School Beach Visit  Tues 19th  March

We will be hosting the Strathewen Primary School Beach Visit again on Tuesday 19th March and we are looking for volunteers to assist with preparing and serving the food and snacks, This usually begins about 9.30 to serve morning tea on arrival ,then lunch and finishing with arvo tea around 3.30.

Principal Jane Hayward has advised that the student population has increased to 47. With teachers, parents and grandparents, etc, she is expecting more than 60 this year, necessitating two coaches for the first time, so there will be a little more work required this year.

If you can help please help even if only for the morning or the afternoon please let me know.

Mal Slater

Happy 114th Birthday Rotary
THE HISTORY OF ROTARY

The world’s first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. These men wanted to rekindle in the turn-of-the-century city the spirit of friendliness they had known in their home towns. Word of the club soon spread and others were invited to join. They named their new club “Rotary” to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members’ various places of business.

history

The first four Rotarians: (left to right) Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul Harris.

Originally formed for fellowship, the first Rotary club quickly evolved to use the talents and resources of its members to serve the community. By the end of 1905, the Rotary Club of Chicago had 30 members. Three years later a second club was established in San Francisco, California, USA. The next year three more clubs were established on the west coast of the United States and a fourth in New York City. Within a few years other groups formed service clubs based on the Rotary model.

Rotary Global Rewards Program

Rotary Global Rewards, our member benefits program, offers discounts on products and services from local and global
merchants, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary.

Over 33,000 members have signed in to use Rotary Global Rewards. To raise awareness of this program, you can:

  3. Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
  4. Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.
You can find instructional videos, how-to-guides, and promotional materials on the Rotary Global Rewards page of My Rotary.  If you have any questions about the program, write to rotaryglobalrewards@rotary.org.
