President's Report No 47

Monday 28th May 2018

Secretary Rhonda Anchen chaired a special general meeting where John McDonald was approved as Treasurer for 2018/19. Bank signatories were approved as John McDonald, Trevor Pickles, Lesley Shedden and Graham Gill.
Thanks to Jan Emmett for standing in as speaker with her “Rotarian Behind the Badge” when Nigel Cooper cancelled at short notice.
Maggie and Chris are forming a small working group to investigate a memorial for Mary Elliott. If you have a proposal please contact Maggie Isom.
The RC Highton, with the Salvos, are collecting socks for the homeless. If you wish to purchase a new pair to donate please bring them to the next club meeting and I will pass them on.
We celebrated Graham Gill’s 80th birthday in style and it was nice to welcome Lois along for the occasion. John Mc Donald reviewed Graham’s life of dedicated service and Maggie Isom presented Graham with an OBE (Over B--- Eighty) certificate and medal. We all enjoyed the cake.

District Changeover was in Maryborough on Sunday 27th May, attended by Lesley and Rob Shedden, Chris and Christine Sims, John Oswald and myself. Our Club was recognised for the following projects: Tree Planting, Battery Recycling, Motor Show and the Lorne P-12 VCAL exchange. We were also recognised for our Inter-Club Projects - Storage Shed with Lions, ANZAC Day with RSL, Ride the Bellarine and the Geelong Expo. Together we make a greater difference!
Our District Governor from 1st July is Anthony Ohlsen and the Theme is “Be the Inspiration”.

Next Meeting
On Sunday 3rd (tomorrow) is changeover at Pako Raw in Geelong, although the new Board will only officially take over on 1st July.
There will be NO meeting on 5th or 11th of June.
The next meeting will on 18th June when we will hear from Damian Armor about Epworth Hospital. You are welcome to bring partners and friends to this talk.

Chairman's Report

Rotary Meeting Chairman’s Report   Monday 28 May

Jan Emmett spoke on her life story as part of the Rotarian behind the Badge – she named her presentation “a Torquay housewife’s story” or “The Rotarian Under the Table” an early indicator of her versatility and a
Jan has been involved with Torquay Rotary when her dear Husband  Rob –  was President in 2002
Jan was born in Middlesex England, then lived later in Muswell Hill in Hornsey and described the first years of her life living in and around poverty, bombed streets & rationing.
She describes her early years & growing up as a healthy, hyperactive, athletic child, who felt she beat any boy on the block !!!
She rock climbed, abseiled & leant how to manage a canoe , competing in slalom & white water canoeing in rivers & weirs
She headed off to London, where she worked at some amazing jobs including the Crafts Advisory Committee a subsidiary of the Victoria & Albert Museum . She met Rob when she was working at the CIBA foundation & it was love at first sight. They married in July 76 at St Margaret’s in Rusper and then 8 months later emigrated to Australia.
They settled in Torquay & had a family of 2 daughters Nikki & Thea, a dalmatian & a cat
Her first involvement in Rotary was when she started catering & waitressing for Club meetings at the Surf Coast Information & Sports centre
She is so very proud of Rob’s amazing contribution to the Club & she has every intention to follow in his footsteps. She was able to be a huge part of Rob’s legacy setting up “The Rob Emmett fund” to be spent on projects that would benefit Torquay’s young people.
Donations from the fund were to Bellbrae Primary school, then the combined construction by Torquay Rotary & GORCC of the new playground on Torquay’s foreshore facing the ocean – a favourite place for Jan & her girls
Jan has re-joined the Club again & is renewing friendships & has taken on the role of Program Coordinator and is looking forward to another great time with Torquay Rotary Club.

We were also privileged to catch Graham Gill off-guard with a surprise celebration for his 80th Birthday which will unfortunately clash with our Changeover function tomorrow. We managed to sneakily get Lois to the meeting to join in the celebration.
Congratulations Graham on reaching this significant milestone and we hope that you have a wonderful celebration with your family this weekend.

Chairman
Maggie Isom

Club 30th Anniversary Photos
Most of you were quite captivated with the Photos that were shown at our Clubs 30th Anniversary Party and expressed an interest in obtaining a copy of the presentation.
Whilst we could upload these pics to the cloud so that you can access them I'm sure you will agree that there's nothing quite like having a copy of your own on a USB memory stick. So.....we have purchased a quantity of 16gb Memory Sticks and Rotary Club of Torquay etched Key Tags (see pic below)
These will be available at a cost of $10 and will be able to pick up at our Changeover Lunch next weekend.
