President's Report No 34

Greetings All,

Our second, and final, meeting at The Minya was another success and we were informed of  the great work being performed in he Pacific Region by Dr David Goldsmith, a colleague from of John Oswald's from Ballarat. See Report elsewhere in the Bulletin.

I hope that you all enjoying your Long Weekend holiday, except for those of you who did the hard yards at our Bunnings BBQ thanks to you all.

Remember that as a result we have No Meeting tomorrow night, however while you have a night off it would be a good opportunity to follow up on the email that you will have received from Secretary Lesley Shedden during the week. As the Club now has the majority of our fundraising done for the season we are in a position to consider how & where this money should distributed.

This is your opportunity to give direction to the Board as to where you would like to see these $$ allocated and the projects you would like us to support. So please give consideration to this and respond to Lesley's email.

Our thoughts go to John McDonald who has spent most of the past week in the Epworth Hospital fighting an infection, .........but really John that's going to extremes to avoid a Bunnings BBQ.......we wish you a speedy recovery and you are back on deck quickly.

If you have a spare hour or two over the weekend you may also like to drop in to Torquay Toys and give Howard a hand to sell some of our Raffle tickets while the prizes are on display at the shop next door.

Remember that our next meeting will be Monday week on the 18th and it will be held at the Angling Club at Fishermans Beach (near the Boat Ramp) and there will also be a Board Meeting afterwards.

See you all there.

Trevor

Chairman's Report - Dr David Goldsmith

Monday Night Dr David Goldsmith detailed the development of several dental projects he has been involved with in Tonga, Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu.

He is in the process of developing a dental preventative unit at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara and progressive dental education program in the schools of Honiara. A container of dental equipment fortuitously intercepted from the public auction process is now on the way to Honiara, virtue of DIK in Geelong. David will lead a team to the National Referral Hospital in July/August this year to install up to seven dental chairs and offices, and myriad other projects.

Another DIK Container jam packed with goods destined for the Solomons

Whilst we are all giving thought to our Clubs distribution of Funds for 2018-19 perhaps you may give consideration to this worthwhile project.

Please read a much more detailed report of Davids presentation by following this link SOLOMONS DENTAL PROJECT REPORT

Funding from Rotary will allow the team to fit out rooms with the necessary specialist cabinetry, sinks and floor coverings and increase the number of surgeries installed.
  • A grant of 3k would enable us to increase this number to ????
  • A grant of 5k …
  • A grant of 8k …
  • A grant of 10k would….

Chairman

2019 Strathewen School Beach Visit  Tues 19th  March

We will be hosting the Strathewen Primary School Beach Visit again on Tuesday 19th March and we are looking for volunteers to assist with preparing and serving the food and snacks, This usually begins about 9.30 to serve morning tea on arrival ,then lunch and finishing with arvo tea around 3.30.

Principal Jane Hayward has advised that the student population has increased to 47. With teachers, parents and grandparents, etc, she is expecting more than 60 this year, necessitating two coaches for the first time, so there will be a little more work required this year.

If you can help please help even if only for the morning or the afternoon please let me know.

Mal Slater

Relay for Life 2019

NOTE THIS LINK HAS BEEN UPDATED
Relay for Life is on again Friday 15th  - Sat 16th March

I have called our team "Rotary Club of Torquay". That is the team name people will need to type in to search on the Relay for Life website to register themselves and others. It is important to type in the exact name of the team, no other combination of words.

I find the quickest way to access our team is to firstly register your name etc via the above "REGISTER NOW" link register yourself (or renew your 2018 registration) then click on "team search" to Join a Team and type in Rotary Club of Torquay.

Cheers Darrel

If you do  require to swap a date for any reason you will now need to find someone to do this with yourself. I would suggest that you send the request to Greg who has offered to advertise on a BBQ Roster Trading Post in the bulletin

Rotary Global Rewards Program

Rotary Global Rewards, our member benefits program, offers discounts on products and services from local and global
merchants, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary.

Over 33,000 members have signed in to use Rotary Global Rewards. To raise awareness of this program, you can:
  1. Recommend Rotary Global Rewards to all club members. They can visit www.rotary.org/globalrewards from a computer or download the Rotary Club Locator App to use the program on mobile devices.
  2. Post a "Rewards" link to www.rotary.org/globalrewards on your club and district websites. This gives members easier access to Rotary Global Rewards.
  3. Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
  4. Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.
You can find instructional videos, how-to-guides, and promotional materials on the Rotary Global Rewards page of My Rotary.  If you have any questions about the program, write to rotaryglobalrewards@rotary.org.
