President's Report No 35

Monday 5th March, 2018

Our guest speakers this week were Gabrielle Tremul and her mum, Leann Tremul, who spoke about Gabrielle’s genetic condition, Cystic Fibrosis (CF). There is no cure for CF and life expectancy for Gabrielle is 35-38 years. Hearing Gabrielle and her mother speak about their every-day challenges in such an upbeat, optimistic fashion made us all think about how small our own challenges are.

  • On Sunday 4th March Lesley, John Oswald and I promoted Rotary at the Geelong expo at the Rotary Waterfront Market. A great promotion which should perhaps be held regularly?
  • Our club donated $1000 to our Relay for Life team effort. The walk is on 16/17 March at Polwarth Oval, Merrijig Drive. If you have not registered and would like to join our team please contact Graham Gill.

  • I have yet to hear from many members about their availability for the mid-year Book Fair on Queen’s Birthday weekend (8-11 June). Please could you respond to the email.

  • Several members are not responding on Whoozin for each meeting. Please choose “yes” or “no” every week as it’s impossible for catering when 6 members don’t respond. You have the opportunity to edit your response up until Sunday. Please ring Greg Plumridge if you need help with this new RSVP system.

  • You are all invited to the home of Gaynor and Rudi for Happy Hour on Friday 23rd March. Partners and prospective members welcome.

  • If you have any video clips of our Rotary Club activities during the year please forward to Greg Plumridge who is compiling a video for conference on how our club has made a difference this year.

  • BNI (Business Network International) Coastal Connections
  • Trevor Pickles and myself attended the BNI meeting on Thursday morning. This is a business network group which allows business owners to promote their local business to each other and share customer referrals and contacts. It costs $1375 to join for 1 year but they have offered the Rotary Club of Torquay a free membership as their Charity Membership Seat. The one stipulation is that a Rotarian must attend BNI weekly meetings and share our activities with the group. Meetings are held at the Spring Creek Football Clubhouse at 7.30am (yes AM!) on Thursdays. The board is yet to approve this offer but I think it is an excellent opportunity for our club.

    Monday 12th March
    NO MEETING.
    It is Labour Day.

President Gaynor Schols

merchants, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary.

Over 33,000 members have signed in to use Rotary Global Rewards. To raise awareness of this program, you can:

  2. Post a "Rewards" link to www.rotary.org/globalrewards on your club and district websites. This gives members easier access to Rotary Global Rewards.
  3. Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
  4. Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.
You can find instructional videos, how-to-guides, and promotional materials on the Rotary Global Rewards page of My Rotary.  If you have any questions about the program, write to rotaryglobalrewards@rotary.org.

We are now fully operational with our new system for registering for our weekly dinner meetings. Called Whoozin, this program is used by other local Rotary Clubs with great success.

In Summary the way it will work is:-
  • You will receive an initial email invitation each Monday for the following week's meeting.
  • You can immediately accept or decline, leave until later.
  • You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
  • You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
  • You can register up to 5 guests
  • You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
  • Please Note that if you do not register your intentions you will be charged for the dinner fee.
