President's Report No 46
Last week our guest speaker was David Meade and Maggie has summarised his presentation in her Chairman's Report elsewhere in this Bulletin
Thanks Maggie, for inviting David along to speak to the Club and for your feedback. I’m sure our Club will look at this project positively.
Our guest speaker on Monday this week will our own Ben Featherstone who will be presenting a report on the Pacific Rehabilitation and Mobility Conference that he and Gaynor attended in Fiji last month as representatives of our Club.
We look forward to your presence on Monday.
Remember too that there will be a Happy Hour at 4 Jetti Lane on Saturday, June 15, between 5 & 7pm – BYO plate to share and beverage to your liking.
Chairman's Report - David Meade

We were fortunate to have David Meade Co Director, Community Health , Rehabilitation & Palliative care at Barwon Health speak to us  about the proposal for a brand new rehabilitation centre for Geelong children and youth.
Since 2009, clinicians and specialists at the Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service – a service just for young people in the Barwon South West Region have been working with children from infancy to late adolescence (0-18), including those with traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and spinal cord injuries and others, such as those with cerebral palsy.
The focus of the rehabilitation service is on ‘kids leading kids’ lives’: going to school, being with friends and enjoying hobbies and sports.
Currently these children are treated in the Community Rehabilitation Centre at the McKellar Centre, which has been designed for adults. However, children are not ‘little adults’ and local families need facilities designed just for them.
David explained  when children  gave the feedback that they did not feel welcome in the current rehab environment , - and stated it was full of “ old people with funny smells “ – the furniture  was all at adult heights and they felt uncomfortable – it was time to think about a newly designed rehab service for these children
This will be a purpose built space and the first facility to be codesigned with people who use the facility in mind.
Children & young people have already had an opportunity for input into the design , with ideas that it should be “ Fun” ,  “ Non clinical” Welcome and cosy !
The Campaign for funds began 2 years ago and it is hoped this project will reach its goal of $3 million within three years, through generous community support.
So far the Project that will be fully funded by the community has raised $2 million and there will be an opportunity for Clubs such as ours to contribute in the future
Pease follow the link for further details of this exciting local Project

Who's Up To What

Kununurra in WA. Yesterday we walked through the Hidden Valley of Mirimar National Park just on the outskirts of town.
When we reached the lookout we were greeted by a bushfire! If it had crossed the road there was a caravan park to the left and the industrial area straight ahead.
It didn't - this was no Black Saturday event - but somewhat exciting all the same. Off to the Bungle Bungles today.
