President’s Message

Greetings and welcome. Thank you for joining our online news and updates.

As the end of the year draws near, the Christmas Spirit has been alive and well in Torquay. Our Christmas breakup at Torquay Taphouse, judging by the amount of noise and laughter, was a fantastic night of fellowship that celebrated a successful year of giving and supporting our local and broader communities. I’m sure everyone enjoyed the use of a new venue, giving us plenty of opportunity to move around and socialise with fellow members, throw in a visit from Santa and it made for a sensational evening. Thank you to Neil and his helpers for looking after us.
The Christmas spirit carried much wider than just our breakup. Here is a reflection on some of what we have been involved with over the last week.
  • You have provided two loads of donations to Torquay Food Aid, made up of essential food items, toiletries and gifts. A third carload of goods was also donated by members of BNI, arranged by Kelly, in support of our efforts . When we made our delivery, it was so pleasing to see such an impressive amount of donations provided by the community for those in need at this time of the year. Thank you to all who donated, we can only imagine the difference this will make to the families supported by Torquay Food Aid.

  • Torquay Rotary Community Spirit and John McDonald Awards were presented to eleven local grade six primary school students in nine local schools, bringing many smiles to faces of the recipients and their parents. There were also some tears from parents and a sense of pride for our members presenting these awards. Comments such as “ This was the most important award to receive. Also his pop will be so proud as a past Rotarian” and “this (the voucher specifically) will make such a difference for the family and the start of the secondary school year” help you to understand the impact the awards make for the recipients.(Please note that we have received permission to use any photos published in this bulletin)
  • On Tuesday morning Lesley Shedden, Gerard Hogan and I joined with Kelly Binyon at the bowls club for a presentation to BNI (Business Network International). Kelly represents Torquay Rotary in this organisation and we were given the opportunity to provide some information about Rotary and what we do for the community. Members of BNI have helped us as volunteers on many occasions previously and a number of the businesses are currently sponsoring our club bulletin. We were impressed with the enthusiasm and energy of the members and most importantly they are prepared to give back to the community and were very responsive to our information regarding upcoming events, with many nominating to volunteer at various activities.

I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all members for your support and everything you have done as individuals for our club over the last six months. A special mention to Michelle Boddington (and assistant Lesley) for getting our Bulletins out on a weekly basis – not an easy job but your work is greatly appreciated.
While we are celebrating the positives of this time of year, I am mindful that there are a number of our members, families and friends who are facing some health challenges at the moment, our best wishes go to each of you.

Erika and I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and all the best the New Year. If you are traveling over the holiday season please stay safe and enjoy your time with family and friends.

Landcare thank you email:

Please accept our sincere thanks for the contribution Torquay Rotary has once again made to our events.
It is always a huge relief to know when your team are on site, that everything is under control, and participants will be well catered for. They really are amazing and all done, as we have previously stated, with a smile and humour!.
Thank you and hopefully you can all enjoy the festive season with family and friends.
Looking forward to 2025.
Best wishes
Lesley for the TDLG Committee
  • It’s great to hear that projects commenced some time ago are still progressing and communities continue to benefit from work done previously by Rotarians. I’m sure John Oswald won’t mind me sharing this email following communication he received from a colleague.
David Goldsmith OAM, from my old Rotary Club (Ballarat West), an inveterate leader of Pacific Island dental programs, notes that he will be taking a team to the Solomons next year. Amongst the myriad of items or equipment he is taking (including a Dental truck from HSVA) is a new X-Ray system which won’t need film and CCD’s, and will complement the X=Ray system donated by our club a few years ago – I think it was just before Covid hit. Nice to know that that donation keeps on giving.
  • Following the earthquakes in Vanuatu over the last two days, RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) has immediately established a disaster relief fund to assist victims - RAWCS | Project Details. The board are currently in the process of approving funds to support this relief effort.

Member Well- being report

There are a few members who have been facing some health challenges recently and as the Care Coordinator of the Club – Maggie has been ringing to check on people and paying some hospital visits
Peter Bollen is now in Blakiston House - at the back of Grace McKellar Centre
Pete was very happy to see Maggie and she encouraged him to have some lunch and the nurse caring for Peter, said they had been watching the cricket that day
Debbie Slater has had some major surgery, but is now home with Mal, recovering well, and looking forward to Christmas with the family
David Mitchell has been transferred to Anam Cara for palliative care – Mal Slater has been to see David a few times and reported that he is now very unwell

Community Service
Thank you to Linda Neale, Lesley Shedden, Martin Duke, Richard Hawker, Gerard Hogan, Daryl Lee, Garth Symington and Bruce Turner for staffing the BBQ at the Cowrie market last Sunday. It was a very successful day again with our fundraising account getting a boost of $1664. Well done everyone.
The collection of goods for Torquay Food Aid was extremely successful and we look forward to maintaining our link with this organisation and assisting them in their endeavours to support local individuals and families in need.
A special shout out to BNI Torquay Chapter for their generosity in donating a car load of non perishable food and gifts for Food Aid, with a particular acknowledgement to Kelly Binyon for bringing BNI into this collection.
