President's Report No 36

Monday 12th March, 2018

I hope you all enjoyed your Labour Day holiday last Monday.

Reception for RIP Ian Riseley (RC Sandringham)
On Tuesday President Elect Trevor Pickles and Gail accompanied Rudi and myself to represent our club at Government House. The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, spoke briefly about the great contribution that Rotary makes in Victoria and what an honour it is for Australia to have a Victorian Rotary International President. This was followed by a short speech on “Making a Difference” by Rotary International President Ian Riseley, who is back in Australia for a short visit. We then looked around the state rooms and had tea and sandwiches (yes, cucumber sandwiches!) by the fountain. We were honoured to represent The Rotary Club of Torquay amongst the hundreds of Rotarians attending.

BNI (Business Network International)
As you know, BNI Coastal Connections has offered our club the sole “Charity seat”. Our fees will be sponsored by BNI. The board will make a decision about this on 19th March but if anyone has opinions on the matter please talk to a board member. If we take on this opportunity it means one Rotarian will have to attend the BNI meeting from 7.30-9am every Thursday so we will need a roster in place. This member will be asked to speak for 45minutes on what our club is doing each week.

Book Fair (8-11 June)
We still need a lot more volunteers if this is to be a success. Please can you let me know if you are available (if you have not already responded) and also if you have family, friends or students who might help out – especially for unpacking and clean up.

Happy Hour
We look forward to seeing many of you at our home for drinks and nibbles on 23rd March. Please note that 14 Headland Drive is near the corner of Centreside Drive, as first-time visitors tend to get lost.

Monday 19th March
Our speaker will be Dr Laura Walsh, a local osteopath, who will talk to us about “Positive Exercises as we Age”. Laura is also president of BNI Coastal Connections.
I look forward to seeing you there!

President Gaynor Schols

Relay for Life 2018
Relay for Life is over for 2018. Fortunately the weather was ideal and just held until the end.
A big thank you to all who walked over the almost 24 hours of the event. Without the tremendous support of the extended Gill family the Torquay Rotary Team probably just wouldn't happen, and Jan Emmett was also a big support to the Team.

I am sure that everyone who walk had opportunity the lives of friends and family that have been affect by or taken by this cruel disease.

Rotary Global Rewards Program

Rotary Global Rewards, our member benefits program, offers discounts on products and services from local and global
merchants, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary.

Over 33,000 members have signed in to use Rotary Global Rewards. To raise awareness of this program, you can:
  1. Recommend Rotary Global Rewards to all club members. They can visit www.rotary.org/globalrewards from a computer or download the Rotary Club Locator App to use the program on mobile devices.
  2. Post a "Rewards" link to www.rotary.org/globalrewards on your club and district websites. This gives members easier access to Rotary Global Rewards.
  3. Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
  4. Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.
You can find instructional videos, how-to-guides, and promotional materials on the Rotary Global Rewards page of My Rotary.  If you have any questions about the program, write to rotaryglobalrewards@rotary.org.

We are now fully operational with our new system for registering for our weekly dinner meetings. Called Whoozin, this program is used by other local Rotary Clubs with great success.

  • You can immediately accept or decline, leave until later.
  • You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
  • You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
  • You can register up to 5 guests
  • You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
