President's Message 28th September 2024
Bruce Turner
President’s Message
Greetings and welcome. Thank you for joining our online news and updates.
Another fantastic night of fellowship was enjoyed at Jashn Courtyard for our Social Meeting last Monday. I hadn’t been to this new venue for Jashn but the food was sensational, the staff looked after us extremely well and I was impressed to see all the Geelong colours on display, especially considering how fresh the memories of Saturday’s game were – a true indication of your love for the Cats. If you happened to leave without adding the “shared cost” of breads and assortment of rice please speak to me at the next club meeting (the charge for all main meals balanced).
Michael Reed (in the absence of a President Elect) and myself (along with Lesley Shedden in her role as DG) attended the first meeting/workshop of what is now Group 4 (formerly Groups E & F) in District 9780. This meeting led by Tonie Thiel discussed the growth plan for our group, now named “Barwon”, and was a very productive workshop. Most importantly, as an outcome of the day, Barry Cooper, Secretary and Club Administration Chair of Greater Geelong Rotary has offered to take up the role of Community Leader for the group. The next meeting is scheduled for October 12th and I will keep club members informed on our discussions.
I also attended a planning meeting for next year’s ANZAC Day Service. The RSL has commenced the organisation for the day with many actions in place. It is anticipated that numbers attending the event will again increase. An overview was presented along with a reflection on this years’ service. Torquay Rotary along with the Torquay Lions will again be looking after the Gunfire Breakfast and we have requested a list of roles that can be assigned to our volunteers.
Advance notice regarding our meeting on Monday October 7th. This is our Club Assembly and as if that is not enough fun to pack into one night we are also having our fabulous “Lift The Lid” Hat Night. Now is the time to get your designs sorted. Please Note: this will be a face to face meeting only as the Club Assembly aspect of the evening will require members to join in discussions with their chosen committee.

REMEMBER SOME OF THESE:
Along with the Rotary Walk with us - this is to raise much-needed funds in the fight against polio, and it is a partner’s night, so be sure to bring your partner
along as there will be prizes for the following Hat Categories:
Polio is the world’s forgotten disease and something that should have been made history a long time ago. It is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.
This October we are asking you to Walk With Us for those who can’t. We are challenging you to walk, run or roll 10, 20 or 50km throughout the month and raise vital funds that will help eradicate and prepare us for a Polio free world.
Save these dates to attend or assist at our conference:
Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd at 13th Beach Golf Club and Sunday 23rd March 2025 at The Sands, Torquay.
