President's Report No 32

Hello all,
Monday’s open discussion regarding our two recent major events, the Book Fair and the Motor Show, threw up a number of issues which will be followed up and acted upon to make them run even more smoothly than they already do. Thanks to all for your positive suggestions.

Our thoughts and Best Wishes go out to the Birchalls as Greg recovers in hospital from a procedure late last week.

This coming Monday will see us meet at Minya Winery while the kitchen at the Lions Village is being renovated.

The Book Fair Committee will meet an hour early at the venue for a debrief – and an extra hour of sampling of the Minya wines.

Our Guest Speaker is Matt Ainsworth, an Accountant from Business Network International and has been invited along by Kelly Binyon, please be there to hear what he has to say.

Looking forward to another friendly meeting of Torquay Rotarians over a glass of two of Minya wines.

Trevor

Stories
Happy 114th Birthday Rotary
THE HISTORY OF ROTARY

The world’s first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. These men wanted to rekindle in the turn-of-the-century city the spirit of friendliness they had known in their home towns. Word of the club soon spread and others were invited to join. They named their new club “Rotary” to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members’ various places of business.

history

The first four Rotarians: (left to right) Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul Harris.

Originally formed for fellowship, the first Rotary club quickly evolved to use the talents and resources of its members to serve the community. By the end of 1905, the Rotary Club of Chicago had 30 members. Three years later a second club was established in San Francisco, California, USA. The next year three more clubs were established on the west coast of the United States and a fourth in New York City. Within a few years other groups formed service clubs based on the Rotary model.

I have called our team "Rotary Club of Torquay". That is the team name people will need to type in to search on the Relay for Life website to register themselves and others. It is important to type in the exact name of the team, no other combination of words.

I find the quickest way to access our team is to firstly register your name etc via the above "REGISTER NOW" link register yourself (or renew your 2018 registration) then click on "team search" to Join a Team and type in Rotary Club of Torquay.

Cheers Darrel
