President's Report No 38

Hi Everyone,

Anzac Day 2020 saw us pay our respects in a very different way from our usual destination down at Point Danger. I hope everyone was able to reflect & give thanks for the sacrifices made by all those who have served in the protection of our way of life from the safety of your homes or driveways.

Lest We Forget🌺

I wrote to Bob Tyler, President Torquay RSL to let him know that we had him and his members in our thoughts yesterday. He responded with thanks and appreciation for the continued assistance from the Rotary Club of Torquay🇦🇺🙌

As we continue to live under the Covid19 restrictions it is on all of us to stick to the rules and, if comfortable with it, to download the COVIDsafe app to our mobile phones📱 If we do the right thing hopefully our lives may return to some sort of normality sooner rather than later.

This week’s Zoom meeting sees us mixing  things up and adding some fun (as we can’t be serious all the time🙃). Greg will provide more details below.

Wishing you all another week of good health- stay safe and I look forward to seeing you online!

Don't Miss JOKERS WILD this Monday
Be Sure to log on early to this Monday's ZOOM meeting when we introduce a new FUN activity - JoKeRs  WiLd

To throw some FUN into our Zoom meetings, this Monday we will have a trial run of Jokers Wild  at the start of the meeting and then you then be asked if you wish to be a participant. The real game will be played at the conclusion of each weeks meeting , commencing this week.

How Does it Work ?

For the sake of this exercise lets assume 25 members agree to play at $2 per week. This gives a weekly pool of $50 per week. Each week $25 will go towards the JACKPOT and $25 will go towards 2 x bottles of wine as consolation prizes.

The Play:

A member's name is drawn from the hat. If that member is a paid up player they get to pick a card on the board twice. The card is unpinned and turned over. If it is the Joker they win the Jackpot - $25 for week one and then climbs in $25 increments from there. The player gets a second chance if the first card fails. If the Joker is not drawn the prize jackpots to next week. That player's name returns to the hat after the wine draws. The opportunity is there to be drawn out each week. The cards chosen remain face out on the board so as they are out of play next week.

Two further names are drawn from the hat and these players win bottles of wine (consolation prizes).

Next week the Jackpot has risen to $50. It will take around 25 goes (25 weeks) if the Jackpot fails to go off until the last card, however it should go off well before this. If the Jackpot does not go off by the 5th night we can cap the Jackpot at say $125 and keep drawing out names that night until someone picks the Joker.

If we get more than 25 players then I suggest more consolation prizes otherwise the Jackpot pool may get out of hand. The weekly prize pool to be settled once we know how many players are in. You can have multiple entries if you wish - these will need to have identifying name differences, eg. your wife or nickname.

You do not have to be present at the Zoom meeting to win. If you are not at the meeting The Game Coordinator (me??) will nominate another member to make the card draws on behalf of the missing player. Missing players are also eligible to win the wine.

How to enter:

Players must commit to a minimum of 5 weeks and send the Treasurer $10.  (can be deposited to Club Bank Account) If the Jackpot hasn't been won after 5 weeks then another $10 commitment is required to continue playing. At this point players may drop out but new entrants cannot join. The only time new entrants can join is after a Jackpot payout has occurred. New entrants would then pay an adjusted amount to align with the $10 weeks.

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.

Good Luck with the Challenge and I

Bushfire Relief Donation Options - Be Sure The Money Reaches Those in Need
As much of Australia deals with the tragedy of Bushfires many donation funds are being set up by both government and private groups, and one of the most commonly asked questions is

"Which Charity will ensure that your donation dollars reach those in need?"

When you donate through Rotary you can be assured that over 97% of the monies raised will go directly to those in need.

We are very saddened by the devastating bushfires in our district and across Australia. If you are looking to donate to help those suffering, it is important to make sure your donation is well directed. Below are details of 2 Rotary funds which are assisting those affected.

1. RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service National Fire Appeal
This is the only option for those who can only donate to a recipient with DGR (Donor Gift Recipient) status, or those who want tax deductibility on their donations. Go to www.rawcs.org.au to donate. To make sure the funds go to those affected by the fires in our district, tag the donation to ‘East Gippsland’. RAWCS do use 2.75% of the donations for administration.

2. East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee
This is an account of the Rotary Club of Bairnsdale with the funds controlled by the East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee. Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Projects Account BSB 633000 Acct 165960451. Please email the East Gippsland Rotary Fire Aid Committee when you donate eastgrotaryfireaid@gmail.com

Other worthy causes are:-

East Gippsland Hay Donations and transport costs
For those wishing to donate hay to East Gippsland or elsewhere it is being organised through ‘Need for Feed’

Go to http://www.needforfeed.org/  to arrange it.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is coordinating fodder relief for farmers affected by bushfires in Gippsland and the Upper Murray. The VFF has secured an agreement with the Victorian Government to facilitate the transport of fodder to affected regions. This includes reimbursement of freight costs for transport of donated fodder.

Future Meetings
Whilst  we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, future meetings will held through the ZOOM Platform.

All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.

Last week Club Members and friends came together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially .
We welcomed back Rob Harris & inducted Carla & Simon Egan as new Club members , then District Governor Rosanne Kava  gave an update on District matters

There are a few more interesting speakers arranged in May , so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
