President's Report No 17
 
I hope as many of you as were able tuned in on Monday to the special presentation on World End Polio.
This evening of the 25th, involved the whole of District 9780, and I understand some of our friends from The Rotary Club of Rizal West in the Philippines joined us, following a request from the club for the link to join in.
As this event was pre-recorded, there was no ‘live’ interaction – just listen and watch the amazing presenters, the polio survivors – and their stories.
There were some quite moving times during the stories told – as often happens when people speak from the heart.
Well done to all involved – and Thank you to Lesley for facilitating this evening for our club.
 
It has been a busy week setting up for our Art and Book Sale over this weekend.
We are hoping for a successful few days selling the art work we have been donated – and some of our stock of books.
 
I know many of you are aware, as it has been mentioned and discussed – that Brian Mynott has requested to step down as a member of our club.
Brian has been a valued member of our club for many years. Brian was our Nightjar Market parking supervisor for quite some years, and in his role as Community Service Director, saw the construction of, and coordinated our club involvement in the Bike Park in Spring Creek Reserve.
Brian wishes to continue to receive club information and help us out when he can.
Again – Thank You Brian for your service over many years.
 
Pets on Parade is ‘All Systems Go’. Bruce Turner has done a great job coordinating and running this event.
Please Spread The Word ….. help us promote this online event and help us raise funds for End Trachoma.
We have fliers for promotion – if you would like some to hand out – or know of a retail outlet you can drop some into – please see Bruce.
 
Cowrie Markets are back!
We have had official notification that the Cowrie Markets will be on for the next 4 months.
As well as the BBQ, we will be manning one of the 3 gates entering into the market area.
Note --- There is a new venue ---- the Markets will now be on Torquay Common (where the Nightjar markets were held).
 
Vernon is still resting at home. Although he wishes his improvement was happening a lot faster than it currently is – he is very much looking forward to family and friends being now able to visit.
We wish you good luck Vernon, our thoughts and very best wishes are with you ……
 
Monday night will be a night of fun, horses, stories, and a bit of ‘gambling’ thrown in!
Whilst the good news is that Kithbrooke Park announced on Friday that we are welcome back for Face 2 Face meetings, Unfortunately there was insufficient time to arrange for our Melbourne Cup evening which as you are aware will be held on-line on Teams.
 
Whilst our following meeting on 8th Nov will be back at Kithbrooke it will be strictly under COVID restrictions which Jan has outlined elsewhere in the Bulletin. Please be sure to familiarise yourself with the requirements so that you are fully prepared.

Thanks to the Torquay Community for the overwhelming support of our Pop-Up Art Sale. We have SOLD OUT in only 2 Days with takings in excess of $4,500 so the Sale is now ended and the shop closed. Thanks to all the Rotarians who assisted.

So ----- speaking of horses and animals of the like ….. here is a lovely story …..
 
The Pastor's Ass
The Pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won.

The Pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race
again and it won again.

              The local paper read:
PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT.

The Bishop was so upset with this kind of
publicity that he ordered the Pastor not to enter the donkey in another race.

The next day the local paper headline read: 

BISHOP SCRATCHES
PASTOR'S ASS.

This was too much for the Bishop so he
ordered the Pastor to get rid of the donkey.

The Pastor decided to give it to a Nun in a
nearby convent.

The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the
next day:

NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN.

The Bishop fainted.

He informed the Nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey so she sold it to a farmer for $10. 
The next day the paper read:

NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10.

This was too much for the Bishop so he
ordered the Nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run
wild.

The next day the headlines read: 

NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE.
The Bishop was buried the next day.

The moral of the story is . . . being
concerned about public opinion can
bring you much grief and misery . .
even shorten your life.

So be yourself and enjoy life.
Stop worrying about everyone else's
ass and you'll be a lot happier and
live longer!

Thanks to the Torquay Community for the overwhelming support of our Pop-Up Art Sale. We have SOLD OUT in only 2 Days with takings in excess of $4,500 so the Sale is now ended and the shop closed.

Melbourne Cup Social Night
 
You are invited to our Melbourne Cup Eve Social  meeting this Monday 1st November at 6.30pm.
 
Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions we are still unable to meet Face 2 Face at Kithbrooke Park so we will again be meeting using Microsoft "Teams" (see link below) 
 
However, Neil Henderson has some fun and frivolity planned, including a Phantom Call of the Cup for us to try and pick the winner of.
 
So here is an opportunity dust off your finest Spring Carnival outfits and to "Frock Up" for the meeting.

Although this comes on short notice, it has been suggested that we could form individual groups of up to 10 people in Rotarians homes which would add to the social aspect of the evening. So please give it some thought and see what you can organise amongst yourselves and possibly your neighbouring friends & Rotarians.
 
The online meeting will begin at 6.30pm as usual and I suggest that you logon 10 or 15 minutes early to ensure your connection is working and to engage in some social banter.
 
You are also welcome to invite friends and guests to join us by forwarding this email containing the Teams Link to them or inviting them to your home.
 
Meals will be up to individuals to arrange

Important Information Regarding the Return to Face 2 Face Meetings at Kithbrooke Park

Hello Fellow Rotarians, Families and Friends of Rotary,
 
I am sending out this message to you all so that there will be NO confusion when we resume our meetings at Kithbrooke Park as of Monday 8th November.
 
I do realise that this can be a controversial subject but for those of you who haven’t been vaccinated for any reason whatsoever, you will not, unfortunately, be able to enter the Clubhouse unless you have proof of reason why you are not immunised, i.e health reasons….!!
 
They have very strict rules, as you will understand, and it is up to us all to respect that and follow their entry rules and guidelines. Although a few of us in Rotary are actual residents here most are visitors, so this applies to everyone coming to Kithbrooke Park.
 
We are expected, as everywhere else, to be fully vaccinated, have proof of our vaccinations and must wear face masks at all times unless sitting down with a drink and/or food.
 
We will have a Covid Monitor at the door who will record everyone’s certificate of proof of vaccinations.  This does include any family members, friends and our guests that have been invited.
We really appreciate your patience on our first visit to the Clubhouse as we take record of everyone’s proof of vaccinations, if this hasn’t been done already, etc., as this might be a bit slow to start off, so please remain outside (or in your cars if raining) until you’re able to enter the premises in a safe and proper manner.

Pets on Parade 2021 - now open for entries

Torquay Rotary’s Pets on Parade 2021 is now open for entries. We have great prizes which include a fantastic dog kennel, pet supplies and Veterinary services so now is the time to get your entry in.

We will be accepting entries and donations through until Wednesday December 8 with winners to be announced on  Monday December 13.
 
Australia is the world's only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. The World Health Organisation had a global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020. Whilst there has been success in a number of countries, trachoma is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness.

Cause:- Lids4Kids is a nationwide 100% volunteer project to rescue plastic bottle lids
from landfill to benefit the environment and kids. ... Lids4Kids hopes to rescue
eligible lids from landfill for projects that benefit all Australian kids in need.

So if you could collect milk bottle tops for recycling to reduce the amount of
waste being sent to landfill., you will contribute to Torquay Rotary’s
Environment Project

Just remove the yellow, blue or red plastic top from milk bottles, wash clean &
pop into a container .

Rotary International & District 9780 Info

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2023
Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria.
 
Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.
 
The Convention will take place 27-31 May 2023 using Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre for functions.
