From the President

Club rules and bylaws – possible changes and your input

Following on from the report by PDG Chris last week, all members have received an email with information and documents regarding our rules, bylaws and legislative changes which are now possible. As Chris said, we don’t have to do anything but there are various levels of flexibility now available to us. We seek your input so please do consider this and make sure your thoughts are heard whether by email or in our discussion at this week’s meeting.

Feedback from the Board meeting

Rotary Fitness Stations

The equipment has now been purchased, with Ben Smith arranging its collection. GORRC will store them and once all details are finalised, construction will commence. I also remind you to support our crowd funding for this project on Communities, as we are still seeking funds to ensure its success. I can also confirm Bendigo Bank is keen to see this project succeed and become a case study for other Rotary Clubs.

Risk Assessments

Mike Reed has prepared detailed Risk Assessment documents for each BBQ. It is essential everyone takes the need for these assessments very seriously, as they are key to our insurance cover. A fundamental step for us all is to sign on and off at each event, including each BBQ. The event captain will take charge of this process. I know it sounds onerous, but I am sure it won’t be and we will all become familiar with the process quite quickly.

You may or may not also be aware we have increased the price of a sausage in bread, with or without onions, to $3, which is a reflection of the increase in the cost of ingredients.

Strategic planning and visioning

The Board has agreed we should start a strategic planning process for the club, as has also been discussed at meetings. I will be in touch with Jessie Harman about how we get this going. As I understand it we all need to get our brain-storming hats on. It should be very positive for us so stay tuned for more details.

Town entrance signs

Along with the Lions Club, we will provide new Rotary signs to be attached to new entrance signs at Darian Road and Jan Juc which Council will erect. It will be good to have this recognition back in place, as it has been some 5 – 6 years since our signs were removed.

The Rotary Foundation Centenary Youth Talent Show

Planning for this event is continuing with Chris Sims, the Youth Committee and Bryson West from Surf Coast Secondary College. The intention is for this to recognise and celebrate both the Youth in our community and the Rotary International Foundation. We will have more details soon.

Fund Raising and Operating (Club) Account budgets approved

Both budgets were considered and approved and are available in the Club Documents on Club Runner.

Changing roles within Australian Rotary Health

PDG Jane Cox has been appointed to the Baord of Australian Rotary Health and Christine Dufty (RC of Nhill) will take over as District 9780 Chair of ARH. Congratulations Jane.

Make-Up Week

Our Club will not be holding our regular meeting on Monday Oct 10th, instead members are encouraged to do a "Make-Up" at another Club. A fun option for your "Make-Up" is to attend the Grovedale Dinner Auction on Friday 14th Oct which is why we have chosen this week so members can support our Sponsor Club, Grovedale with their fundraising efforts. Please see the article elsewhere in this bulletin and if you're interested please advise Greg Plumridge who is co-ordinating bookings

Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery

Our speakers this week were Tony and Robyn Stokes from the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central. Tony is the Victorian Coordinator of the ROTARIAN ACTION GROUP AGAINST SLAVERY - more info at www.racsrag.org

This action group is endorsed by, but not controlled by, Rotary International.

Slavery is illegal in every nation but it still exists in every country. Depending on the studies and measurements used, it is estimated that there are between 27 and 42 million slaves in the world, many of them children.

Rotary is not in a position to free slaves but the aim of the action group is to work with the partners who can stop slavery , such as the International Justice Mission, and to help fund projects that provide support for vulnerable people in areas prone to human trafficking.

All Rotarians are asked to raise awareness on this issue, to help end slavery.

The current project, for which Robyn is seeking funding, is PROJECT HOPE in Zambia. Robyn is seeking $5,700 per Rotary club which will provide training and micro-loans for 25 widows, school fees for 20 children and school uniforms for 50 children. It is suggested that each club donate $2,850 and apply for a District grant of $2,850 to raise the total of $5,700.

This project is run locally through the Saikolo School in Kasama, Zambia, by Relief Development Justice which is a branch of OM (Operation Mobilisation). This is an interdenominational international mission working through local churches.

Brownlow Football Night

This is a football themed night so dress in your club colours or dress to impress. At this stage we haven't arranged a guest speaker

but hopefully you will be entertained for a while at least any way.

This is a partners night so if your partner is not coming please apologise for them by 9am on Monday 26 September 2016 ph 5222 2022.

Please feel free to invite your friends (you just need to remember to book them in). If you don't apologise for your partner they will

assume to be attending with you.

The program will include an individual trivia challenge to find our very own "football genius" for 2016

Also if everyone can bring one piece of football memorabilia (or more if you wish) it will add to the event.

We need some football decorations for about 5 tables so if we have any volunteers please let me know or if anyone has any ideas for the

evening please give me a call.

It won't be a late night because we will want to get home to watch the Brownlow.

Wear a Hat Day For Mental Illness Prevention 3rd Oct

Friday October 7 2016 is Hat Day, an initiative of Australian Rotary Health, one of the largest not-for-profit

funders of mental health research in Australia.

100% of the money raised during this year's Hat Day campaign goes directly to research helping the one in five Australians affected by

depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses.

Torquay Rotary Club are making Monday October 3rd our HAT DAY PARTY

Community Fitness Stations ....UPDATE

A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment ~~is currently being manufactured~~ is being collect by Ben Smith on Monday. Ben will be updating us at Mondays meeting Re:- the installation plans with GORCC and what assistance will be required from us for the installation.

Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground

Surf Coast Shire Australia Day Awards 2017

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate the things that make our

country great: the people, the land, our diversity, sense of a fair go, lifestyle and freedoms.

We reflect on our national journey. We commit to making our country even better in the future.

The Australia Day Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year Awards are presented annually to local citizens

and groups who make an extraordinary contribution to our local community.

The awards are administered by Surf Coast Shire Council on behalf of the National Australia Day Council and are issued at

one of the celebratory events held across the shire on 26 January 2017.

Anyone can nominate an individual or group who demonstrate:

- Excellence in their field or interest

- Significant contribution to Surf Coast Shire at the local community level, and

- An inspirational role model for Surf Coast Shire citizens.

Award Categories

Nominations for Citizen of the Year must be Australian citizens, over 27 years of age, who live or work in

Surf Coast Shire and have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding

service to the local community over a number of years including:

• demonstrates commitment to mproving the community

• their contributions are completed on a voluntary basis or exceed the normal requirements of the person’s paid work

• accepts civic responsibility

• provides a positive role model for others

• actively addresses local issues

• is law abiding.

Nominations for Young Citizen of the Year

- must be Australian citizens, under 27 years of age,

- who live or work in Surf Coast Shire and have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years including:

• active in youth or other activities in the local community

• leading a balanced life

• loyal to family/community

• is caring, compassionate and sharing

• shows outstanding achievement in academic, sporting, cultural, environment, civic responsibility and the like

Community Event of the Year

is bestowed upon an individual, organisation or community group that has staged a noteworthy event during 2016. Events should have:

• provided a benefit for local people, the local environment, local tourism or local culture

• demonstrated excellence in organising a safe and sustainable event

• involved local people through organising or attending

• reflected the spirit of what makes Surf Coast Shire great.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.

All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!

Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
