President's Report No 24

On Monday we had 22 computers logged on with an audience of 26 …….

Lesley and Rob Shedden had popped in to catch up with Neil and Mary Henderson ---- and all shared Neil’s laptop.

We were joined by Past President Lea Clements from Rotary Club of Rizal West, Gerard Hogan, and two of our Pets on Parade Winners – John Morrison and Steve Symons along with Steve’s partner and winning entrant.

For some reason, John didn’t have his non-traditional pet ‘girls’ entry, as they were busy making honey!

Bruce Turner announced all the Pets on Parade winning entries and their masters, owners or ‘bosses’.

More on the Pets on Parade summary later in the Bulletin.

Congratulations Bruce on a very well run and successful event.

Alan Anderson mentioned an Electric Bed and ‘special’ chair from a person who was mobility challenged. Alan is going to seek interest in these items.

The Motor Show engine has been started - and is all systems go!

Sunday 13^th February is the day we need to lock into our diaries as we need many hands on deck.

Richard Hawker is coordinating the duties on the day.

Richard has the roster from 2020 and has suggested each person consider the ‘same role’ as they did then. If you are unsure of what you did – please contact Richard, as he has the master roster from 2020.

Richard will communicate with us a lot with emails, so please keep an eye on the correspondence.

If you know of any businesses or organisations that have a community volunteering program as part of their employment, see if they can help us – and pass details onto Richard.

Darrel Brewin is coordinating the collection of stationary items from our local schools, to be donated to our Papua New Guinea school project. Darrel has requested some help in collecting and delivering the items to Donation In Kind.

We have a lot of plastic lids from plastic bottles for our Lids4kids program.

Maggie may be calling for some assistance for the working bees planned, to help sort and pack the lids. Maggie will let us know if help is required.

I popped in and saw John McDonald Monday morning.

It is great to see him home – and to be able to drop in for a chat.

John is happy to be home and is getting better.

For your records, our first Rotary Meeting for 2022 will be Monday 10^th January. This is a Social ‘Fish’N’Chips’ night to be held at Kithbrooke Park, on the deck (weather pending). If the weather is unkind to us – we can move into the club room, where we normally meet when we are there.

All will be welcome – family and friends – details of this night will be advised a little closer to the day.

Monday will be our Club’s Christmas Dinner. All partners, family and friends are welcome. Just remember to register yourselves and anyone you are bringing along.

Pets on Parade 2021 - and the Winners are....

Pets on Parade is in its second year after being introduced as an online event last year in response to the difficulties we and so many other organisations faced with fundraising due to the Covid Pandemic.

Of course an event like this would not be possible without support from our entrants and donors, who have helped make this such a successful fundraiser. We had a fantastic collection of amusing, creative and heart-warming images for this year’s event. The funds that have been raised, close on $1,300 (a slight increase on last year) will be forwarded on to the Rotary End Trachoma Program. The following quote highlights why we are directing our funds to the End Trachoma Program …….. “Australia is the world's only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. The World Health Organisation had a global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020. Whilst there has been success in a number of countries, trachoma is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness.”

I would also like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the judges Jan Emmett, Kate Gittings and Trevor Brown who had the unenviable task of sorting through the entrants to select the winning entries. If you’ve had the chance to check through the videos and images, you’d have to agree that this can’t have been easy.

It's All GO! for the 2022 Motor Show

The Torquay Motor Show is BACK for 2022 following a hiatus last year due to COVID-19 This year entries will require to be prepaid to enable us to meet the restrictions for a COVID Safe event. We expect up to 400 Vintage, Veteran, Classic and Contemporary Cars and Motor Cycles to compete for trophies in 22 Classes.

Spectators will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these stunning automotive gems.

You are invited to join in the carnival atmosphere of this popular event held at the spectacular beach side setting of the Torquay foreshore. This is a “Show for the whole family” with, the beach for the kids, the shops for the ladies and the cars for the boys!

Entry Fees remain the same for 2022 at $20 for car & driver, with Adults $5 & Children free. Many attractions will be available to entertain, plus food, good coffee, refreshments & memorabilia on sale. Gates Open at 8.00am with winners announced at 2.30pm.

This event is provided by the Rotary Club of Torquay, proudly supported by the RACV & other local traders, with proceeds from the event to be used for Local, National and International Rotary projects.

Also don't miss our 3^rd Annual Great Ocean Road Street Cruise, which is open to all collectable cars and motor cycles, that will take you up the stunning Great Ocean Road to Torquay the day before the show. The Cruise will finish at the Motor Show ground in Torquay with Food and Entertainment on site.

Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians 2022 Musters

Re the involvement of the RVFR with the International Convention in Melbourne, I note that the RVFR National AGM, which was held in October, considered, inter alia, the following:

The national committee of the RVFR has formed a working group to develop the idea of a tagalong muster prior to the RI Convention in Melbourne in 2023 which will be open to its sister international RV and Caravan Fellowship members.

Even during COVID we can still be busy helping others

Bottle Top Lids

Cause:- Lids4Kids is a nationwide 100% volunteer project to rescue plastic bottle lids

from landfill to benefit the environment and kids. ... Lids4Kids hopes to rescue
eligible lids from landfill for projects that benefit all Australian kids in need.

So if you could collect milk bottle tops for recycling to reduce the amount of
waste being sent to landfill., you will contribute to Torquay Rotary’s
Environment Project

Just remove the yellow, blue or red plastic top from milk bottles, wash clean &
pop into a container .

Cause :- Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs, who collect them, sell them to recyclers and turn the cash into wheelchairs for people who can’t afford them.

Cause :- A Rotary "Donations in Kind" joint exercise with the Rotary Club of Boroko to disperse to needing schools in PNG. They need books that are used in Australian schools from Grades Prep to 8. Plus story books for younger children for grades Prep to 3.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Shekhar and Rashi Mehta at their home in Kolkata. Rashi painted the picture Mother and Child, behind her.

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2023

Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria.

Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.

The Convention will take place 27-31 May 2023 using Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre for functions.
