Presidents Report No 45

Bulletin No. 45 – From the President

Hello everyone

How amazing were Angela and Andrew Bijimba? I hope you enjoyed hearing from them and were inspired by their story. Congratulations Chris and Rhonda for having the foresight to give them the Rypen experience.

Our 2016-2017 goals
The Board spent several hours this week reviewing our goals for the year and updating them with our achievements.  I will have a full report card for you next week but you can also take a look in the My Rotary section of the Rotary International website.  We also put our Fitness Stations project on Rotary Showcase so take a look there as well – it makes me very proud of our club to see this fantastic project on the world stage.

May is Bowelscan Month, so if you haven’t already, make sure you pick up a kit at one of our local pharmacies.  It could save your life.

Scriptwise
Those of us who attended the District Conference heard from Kim Ledger about Scriptwise and why we all need to be conscious of potential dangers from prescription medicines and mixing them.
ScriptWise is a non-profit, independent (non-Government funded) organisation and depends on the support of likeminded businesses and individuals to continue the important work in the community to raise much needed awareness and education around the issue of prescription medication addiction and overdose.
Despite perceptions that drug-related deaths are due to illicit drugs, prescription medications are responsible for most drug-related deaths (71%).  ScriptWise’s primary objective is to educate all Australians about the safe and effective use of prescription medications, thereby preventing misuse and addiction in Australia.
Scriptwise is seeking our help to raise $40,000 for their annual International Overdose Awareness campaign.

District has introduced a new online registration & payment system which will apply to all future events, including District Changeover, PETS, District Conference and District Training Assembly.
The system is linked to the District database and allows a seamless process for all members to register for events.
Club officers can also register members for any event.  See the home page of the District website or click on the link above to read full details of the system and a step by step guide to register for your next event.

It was a pleasure on Monday night to present Cheques on behalf of our Club to Interplast $1,000 received by Amanda Hough and Parkinson's Victoria $500 received by Peter Bollen

Belmont Rotary Headspace Fundraiser Luncheon 26th May

HEADSPACE BUSINESS CHARITY LUNCHEON

26TH MAY 2017 at the NEW GEELONG FOOTBALL CLUB GRANDSTAND

The Rotary Club of Belmont has made a 2 year commitment to Headspace

Geelong (young people aged between 12 and 25 in the Geelong region) to assist

with funding for specific community mentoring projects and in addition to help in

the mentoring of the young people in the Headspace Geelong program. Our aim is

to “make a difference” and reduce the number of young people suicides and

improve their mental health.

The Rotary Club of Belmont in conjunction with its Community

Partners supporting;

• Your Headspace;

• Your Youth; and

• Your community.

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early

intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in

promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health,

physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

The Rotary Club of Belmont commitment and its relationship with Barwon CYF and

Headspace Geelong is targeted towards the health and wellbeing issues of our young

people within the greater Geelong community. We believe that in conjunction with

our community partners, by treating these issues early and providing a holistic model

of support, the risk of them developing into more serious problems is greatly

decreased.

It has been recognised that within the Geelong community an increasing number of

referrals of young people who are disengaged from education, training and social

settings is occurring. Some of these young people also suffer from severe anxiety,

preventing them from leaving their homes and participating in healthy

relationships/activities. Our luncheon is aimed at raising significant funds that then

can make a difference to our local youth.

All proceeds will go to Headspace Geelong.

As our current Rotary year draws to a close now is an appropriate time for us to begin planning for the "New" Rotary year.

2017-18 will be an exciting year for our Club particularly as we work alongside our recently inducted new members. President Gaynor will give a presentation on this to the Club early in the "New" Year however in the mean time would like all members   give thought as to what Avenues of Service and Projects you would like to be involved with.
Avenues of Service
  • International
  • Youth
  • Community
  • Club
  • Membership & Development
  • Vocational
  • Public Relations
Cub Projects
  • Motor Show
  • Book Fair
  • BBQ's
  • Ride the Bellarine
  • ANZAC Day
  • Golf Day
  • Major Events (ie Dine with Cadel)
......or if you have any ideas for possible future projects/events please raise these with any Board Members for consideration.

Most importantly our Club urgently needs to nominate a President Elect for the 2018-19 year to enable that person to participate in the full President Elect Training Program during the coming year.

Also before the "New" year gets underway there are two tasks for which assistance would be appreciated, they are -
  1. GOLF DAY Since the evolution of the Torquay Golf Club into the RACV Resort, our Club has struggled to return the Graham Price Golf to the popular and significant event it was in its heyday. This year an opportunity exists for this event to be included in the Calendar for the inaugural "Torquay Life Festival" which is being held during the month of October. Darrel Brewin is the Lead of the Golf Committee and would be eager to hear from anyone interested in joining this committee. Please contact Darrel on 0417185071
  2. Public Relations If you are media savvy have an interest in photography and/or are comfortable working with Facebook, writing short articles and posting website stories then Greg Plumridge would be interested in having you join the Public Relations Team. There are unlimited opportunities for us to promote our Club to the outside world and we are restricted only by the people power and time available to present and post the articles. Please contact Greg to discuss on 0418521321

The Rotary Leadership Institute

Is a three part series of fast paced, interactive one day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their knowledge of Rotary.

The dates for the 2017-18 Program have just been released.
The 3 full-day training courses will be held in Geelong on Aug 5, 2017, Oct 14, 2017 and Feb 3, 2018
The club generally pays the fees and registrations close on 30 June.

Who Should Attend RLI:

Rotary Clubs are encouraged to select at least two candidates for RLI annually.  Participants return to their Club with enthusiasm new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential leadership in the Club. In particular, It's good for all Rotarians but especially recommended for new members, those with board positions and Presidents Elect.

In recent years Vernon D'Souza and PE Gaynor Schols have graduated from RLI so if you are interested in the course I encourage you to discuss with either of them.

Please contact Chris Sims on 0439 209 036 for more details or

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
